As you all well know, organic living is one of my top priorities so I told him I would be happy to post his article about why it is so very important to buy organic produce and stay away from pesticides. It’s great to meet others who share my passion for going organic! Here is what Franco has to say about it:

Why You Should Pay Attention to The Vegetables You Buy

It’s no real secret these days that pesticides are used on a lot of fresh produce. But what you might find a little more surprising are the health concerns associated with such pesticides.

According to a guide released by the Environmental Working Group (EWS) in the U.S., scientists now believe that even small doses of pesticides and chemicals can have damaging effects to your health and long-term wellbeing. This is particularly concerning for fetal development and during the stages of early childhood. As such, these scientists advise you to limit the amount of pesticides that you consume in your diet.

It is said that by eating just five servings of fruits and vegetables in which pesticides were used in their processing stages, can mean that you are consuming at least 10 different pesticides contained in those foods.

The fruits and vegetables that you should always purchase organically are:

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Nectarines
  4. Apples
  5. Peaches
  6. Pears
  7. Cherries
  8. Grapes
  9. Celery
  10. Tomatoes
  11. Sweet bell peppers
  12. Potatoes

Why do you need to be cautious of consuming foods with pesticides?

Pesticides have been linked to various health issues, including eye problems, neurological disorders, some forms of cancer, immune system dysfunctions, and sterility problems. Washing fruits and vegetables alone won’t completely remove pesticides, which is why awareness during your grocery shopping is critical.

A decline in your overall health and wellbeing while consuming pesticide grown food is not sometimes seen immediately but can be lethal in the long term. As if modified food wasn’t enough, many farmers have moved to using products treated with many various vaccines and antibiotics to feed their livestock. This creates antibiotic resistance in the animals and chemicals are passed through to the ground, thus affecting fruits, vegetables and any other plants growing in the area. Organic food farmers simply don’t use antibiotics, pesticides or other toxic chemicals on their farms.

What can you do about it?

It’s not just a trend, consumers are becoming more and more aware of the steps that are needed to stay away from pesticide grown crops, and more farmers are also taking action. Organic production is growing rapidly in many parts of the U.S., and many supermarkets are now choosing to sell 100% organically grown foods while finding new ways of creating consumer awareness. Start looking for chemical-free produced products, read labels but don’t be fooled by words such as “natural” on packaging products. Real chemical-free farmed organic produce, food, and household products, whether vegetables or organic dish soap, will clearly state the ingredients and/or methods used to grow or create that product on the label.

The best way to make sure you are consuming fruits and vegetables that are both healthy and safe for you is to purchase only organic produce, or grow your own food! The same can be said about the many drinks available for consumption. Stick to drinks made from organically grown fruits and vegetables (orange, apple, grape juices) and be sure to buy only herbal teas that are organic and pesticide-free which offer plenty of health-boosting properties for your body and your mind.
